that night, we answered a regular call, something about crazy loud noises coming out from a basement. while driving to the area all i could think when i first heard the bass stomping was: “man, whatever, this doesn t even sound like music to me.” and we were at least a 100 meter away from the source of the sound. when we got there, after knocking several times on the door, we decided we had more than enough probable causes to bust in. after a warning, we kicked the door open. what we saw inside was a five feet tall woman jumping around in that cacophony. we screamed and she ignored us, my colleague then panicked and shot her with his taser several times – she then simply pulled the probes out of her body shouting moments moments – and continued to jump around..

fifty first recordings was created in 1994 out of a small but very productive studio in london called state 51 using the down time and the very talented engineers who had been brought together for state 51 s existing clients. state 51 was the go to studio for the likes of x-press 2, sharp, amalgamation of soundz. the engineers we worked with included mark woolford, james brown, james reynolds & mark yardley. fifty first recordings soon found a name for itself and was very quickly at the forefront of the new generation of uk garage music. we produced and released music in the 90s, for over 7 years, with the likes of tuff jam etc. and later went to develop other imprints such as konnect / test press / unda vybe / spread love / tick etc., some in partnership with producers and managed artists.

hot off a couple of 12” from topher horn, rocksteady disco follows up with its first compilation featuring a heap of heavily sampled originals from more well-known editors. pontchartrain leads the release off with a summer-inspired aural prozac number, just in time for this june release. next up is notorious detroit editor lafleur, busting out this original milky-smooth detroit boogie house production. a slight little rearrangement from rocksteady disco label boss peter croce makes this one a bit smoother for the djs. lyon, france’s g2s kicks off the flip with a big-bottomed stomper reminiscent of some mcde ‘raw cuts’. pontchartrain book-ends this release with a track that puts the ‘rocksteady’ in rocksteady disco, with heavy analog-meets-electro drum programming and complete with pontchartrain on vocoder duties. hand numbered edition of 500 copies with dl code.

great debut release and new label from a rubadub shop regular featuring tracks from shop regulars. tip. this first release is made up of 3 tracks from my friends and 1 from myself. there’s no concept here other than putting out music that was otherwise not going to see the light of day. the first track is by bleaker who put out a 12inch on unknown to the unknown last year, the second by miz aka big miz whos been putting out music on dixon avenue basement jams, the third by the burrell connection who has a release on west end communications and a track on a craig knows released compilation and the last track is from myself which got a play on big mizs boiler room set. these tracks were all sent to me around the same time and it felt right to make a place for them on a record. bleaker, miz and the burrell connection have all been making waves in scotland and beyond and these 3 tracks are proof that the attention is warranted. and i dont think my track is too bad either.
